Single buoy
moorings (SBM) or SPBM (single point buoy moorings), SPM
refers to the integrated mooring and fluid transfer system
through which oil is transferred to and from tanker vessels.
The crude oil required for the Kochi Refineries (KRL) is
imported through the port. The present throughput of 7.5 MTPA
is slated to be increased to 13.5 MTPA.
Due to the economies of transportation of the crude oil in
very large crude carriers (VLCCs), KRL has mooted a proposal
for establishment of a single buoy mooring (SBM) for their
crude oil handling, off Puthuvypeen, at a distance of about
19.5 km from the shore and the supporting tank farm
facilities.
According to the MOU signed by KRL and CoPT, the SBM and tank
farm facilities will be provided by the KRL with their own
investment or through BOT system.
