P&O Ports purchased
the container terminal at Mundra from the Adani Group in
May 2003 and Mundra International Container Terminal
better known as MICT was established. The terminal
commenced operations on the 18th July 2003 with the first
vessel M.V. MSC Camillie.

Mundra International Container Terminal (MICT) managed by
P&O Ports is the newest and the largest container terminal
in India. It is strategically located near India’s largest
cargo generating regions and is able to handle the deepest
container vessels of the world.
The MICT Terminal is spread over a vast area and provides
a container yard of 25 hectares. This container yard
caters to 5000 ground slots and 240 reefer points. MICT is
well connected by road and rail links to all the major
cargo centres in the North West hinterland and thereby
rest of India.
The MICT provides the quay line of 632 m with the depth of
17.5 m CD alongside and a short channel of only 1.1 km.
The terminal operates 24 hrs-365 days a year and has no
tidal restrictions.
The port is already connected by a 2 lane road to the
national highway. MICT has an on-dock rail yard and rail
loading facility and has the advantage of being the
nearest port to the Northern region which is India’s
fastest growing region with respect to container traffic.
MICT currently handles on an average more than two train
per day. MICT handled highest number of 83 trains in the
month of October 2005.
The terminal is well equipped with the best and latest
technology equipments. The terminal currently has Four
super post panamax-twin lift quay cranes, Two post panamax
quay cranes, Two mobile harbour cranes, Eighteen rubber
tyred gantry cranes and Two rail mounted gantry cranes.
MICT is supported by twelve direct lines providing
services to Europe, USA, China, Far East, Middle East,
Africa etc. Currently, MICT is availing the support of
major lines like MSC, APL, China Shipping, Contship,
Norasia, UASC, CMA-CGM, P&O Nedllyod, PIL, MISC, K-Line,
Messina, OOCL, Simatech, Super Galex etc.
MICT also provides Container Freight Station facility
outside the terminal which is situated at a distance of
about 4 km from the terminal. The Container Freight
Station is spread over 20 hectares of land and provides
closed warehouse of 1.9 hectares and open container yard
of 9.95 hectares.
The MICT CFS provides all facilities of international
standard alongwith some additional facility of leased
office space for CHAs and Lines, leased container storage
space, damaged container repair facility, canteen
facility, weigh bridge etc. The MICT container freight
station registered highest throughput of 5545 teus in the
month of December 2005.
MICT is an ISPS Compliant & BS7799 Certified port. The
statement of ISPS Compliance was received on the 8th June,
2004 by Capt. Sandeep Mehta, President, Adani Port. MICT
had successfully completed an audit
under the stringent standards of the BS7799 (accepted as
the global standard ISO 17799) conducted by the British
Standard Institute, India and has been certified as BS7799
Certified organization.
