Chennai Container
Terminal (CCT) managed by P&O Ports commenced it's
operations on 30th November 2001. The Terminal was awarded
by Chennai Port Trust to the consortium led by P & O Ports
to develop, operate and manage the container terminal for
a period of 30 Years.
The Chennai Container Terminal (CCT) is a major south
Indian terminal with sufficient draft, equipment,
productivity levels and cargo available to satisfy the
requirements of shipping lines.
Chennai Container Terminal achieved a record throughput of
700,107 TEUs for the Calendar year 2005. This throughput
came from 618 vessel calls with an average parcel size of
1132 TEUs. CCT is south India’s largest container terminal
with 55% market share for the year 2005.
During the year 2005, CCT has put in huge infrastructure
investment by way of procuring 8 brand new Noell RTGs and
1 Superpost Panamax Twin Lift quay crane also by the
German manufacturer Noell. The availability of new and
efficient equipment has attracted several shipping
services. During 2005 alone there have been eight new
shipping services launched by lines at Chennai.
All major commodities exported from south India such as
garments, granite, chemicals, tobacco, engineering goods
and agricultural products have significantly increased
shipments through CCT in 2005.
CCT is at present operating from a 885m-quay line and
145500 sqm of Container Yard with 7 QC’s and 24 RTG’s. The
New Operations Centre inaugurated on 7th July 2004
provides a world class working environment.
The equipment and IT infrastructure is state of the art,
running the renowned Navis application for Terminal
management, Remote Data Terminals, Wireless connectivity,
IP telephony.
With more operators bringing in their vessels with direct
sailings to many places in the world stretching from
Europe to Far East ports, CCT is all set to become the hub
port of choice on the east coast of India.
