The
geographical position, beautiful coastline and the exotic
beaches of India makes her a popular destination for Cruisers.
It is no surprise that the early voyages by Vasco da Gama, the
famous Portuguese sea-farer and explorer set sail from Lisbon
and finally landed at Calicut, malabar coast (Kerala State)
500 years back.
Being on the maritime highway connecting the Far East and
Australia to Europe, Cochin port (CoPT) has embarked upon an
ambitious business strategy to project itself as a major
cruise destination in the region.
Apart from a proposal to develop the inland waterways in
Kerala, the port also envisages setting up an exclusive
passenger terminal of comparable international standard.
It is proposed to set up the passenger terminal jointly with
the Kerala government, government of India and the CoPT with
stakes of 26%, 26% and 25%, respectively. The balance equity
will be sold to a private firm, which will operate the
terminal.
