Kochi,
April 11. The union minister of Shipping T.R. Baalu
congratulated the Cochin Shipyard management for being
nominated to build the largest naval ship ever to be
attempted in the country while performing the steel
cutting ceremony here on Monday.
With this effort by CSL, India is joining an elite club of
six nations that have the technology to build aircraft
carriers. The steel for the prestigious aircraft carrier
is to be supplied by the Steel Authority of India Ltd.
The Rs 3,200-crore ship, the first indigenous aircraft
carrier for the Indian Navy, is 252 meters long and 58
meters wide, can carry a maximum of 30 aircrafts.
The ship is scheduled to be delivered in 2012.
